States and LGA codes

A state is identified by its two-letter code from ISO 3166-2:NG. Pass it as the state parameter. Codes are not case-sensitive.

There are 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, 37 in all.

An LGA is identified by lga_code, for example NGA.20.33_1 for Rimin Gado in Kano. These are GADM’s identifiers.

Join data on lga_code, not on the LGA’s name. Six LGA names are used in more than one state, and spellings vary between sources.

There are 774 LGAs. Each has:

Field Meaning
lga_code Stable identifier
lga Name
is_urban Whether the LGA is classed as urban, from its population density
population People living in the LGA, from WorldPop

State and LGA outlines come from GADM version 4.1, simplified for drawing on a map. In the boundary endpoints an LGA’s identifier is in properties.lgaCode, which matches lga_code in the risk endpoints.

GADM’s boundaries can differ from other sources, such as GRID3 or a ministry’s own map. If you combine AI4M data with another dataset, match on names carefully or join through GADM codes.

Each state belongs to one of six geopolitical zones: North Central, North East, North West, South East, South South and South West. The zone’s name is returned in the zone field of State risk.
